SPECIAL EDUCATION EXPERIENCE

We’ve been an In Home Parent Trainer to facilitate home to school and school to home academic, behavior and social emotional learning. Created AM/PM schedules, dietary programs, and crisis family plans. We performed regular checks to ensure IEP compliance in the classroom. This included ensuring children receive accommodations and adjustments, instructional methods meet the IEP, and progress tracking is in place. We also used creative teaching methods to boost student engagement and performance.

With these things, we fostered a supportive special education school culture by taking lead of programs for student expression: 1st Autism Love Day, service learning for students to perform acts of kindness for others, black and Latinx history program, International Dance.

504 COORDINATOR EXPERIENCE

As a 504 Coordinator, we strategically utilized the program as a segue to Special Education when comprehensive documentation for an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a formal diagnosis was insufficient. By leveraging the flexibility of the 504 framework, we ensured that students received the necessary accommodations and support, paving the way for a seamless transition into the more specialized services of special education when required. This approach facilitated a proactive and inclusive strategy to address students' needs, promoting a supportive learning environment.

We took deliberate steps to revive the 504 program my first year as school counselor. We held overdue 504 meetings to place additional students in the program after the oversight. We also meticulously completed the overdue annual reviews, updating the program. By revitalizing the 504 program, we ensured that students' needs were satisfied and that the framework supported their education. We were instrumental in establishing the school's Section 504 compliance with federal and state legislation. We assessed, reviewed, and adjusted policies to ensure legal compliance using a comprehensive approach. We helped create a school that prioritized disability rights and needs while meeting regulatory standards by being educated and proactive.

As a 504 Coordinator, we trained personnel on Section 504 requirements and implementation. We also trained counselors who still needed additional help understanding and implementing 504 plan best practices. We kept the team informed of disability accommodations, education developments, and compliance requirements by attending annual professional development.
